enchantedengland:    The village of Shaftesbury, Dorset, immortalised as the “Shaston” in Thomas Hardy’s novels. This is Gold Hill, although you probably knew that. Shafestbury is also one of the oldest and highest towns in England, dominating what Hardy described as the “engirdled and secluded” Blackmore Vale. Engirdled is a very good word.
